I wanted to share something different with you for today's post, in that these words are not from me and do they ever make me smile!!
These amazing words of wisdom (as usual) come from, Kate "Solo" Solovieva. I absolutely love her work and her approach to deep health. She's an inspiration for being REAL with yourself and just BEING yourself, while working towards your health and wellness goals.
The following comes from her email newsletter which is always so real and to the point. I connected with her to ask if she would mind if I shared her email on the Zen Blog as I think MOST people NEED to hear this as a refreshing reminder that we often create our own barriers and struggles. As usual, she's so great at communicating and so open to people passing along her guidance.
If we simplify, allow ourselves to have self-compassion and focus on JUST the goal itself instead of "more", we would have so much more positive change created in our deep health.
Please take the time to read these fantastic words and story from "Solo" to see what I mean..... 👇
I have kicked off a challenge in Operation Tigger (my group coaching program) - where we spend 10 minutes outside every single day in the month of December.
I am now three days in, and noticing one thing that is making a HUGE difference in my ability and willingness to get my butt outdoors - keeping the goal the goal.
Avoiding the goal creep.
For example, I intentionally removed any pressure to spend those ten minutes outside MOVING.
I don't have to go for a walk.
I don't have to go for a hike.
I don't have to do anything, but BE OUTSIDE for ten minutes.
Today I drove to Starbucks in town and bought myself my once-a-year Peppermint Mocha (why are those things seven dollars now??). I took the coffee outside, and spent ten minutes leaning against the wall in the sunshine.
I didn't meditate, or practice mindfulness, or worked on my gratitude journal. I simply was outside, drinking coffee and scrolling on my phone.
Why was I scrolling on my phone?
Why not?
The goal was not “spend ten minutes outside WITHOUT scrolling on your phone”. The goal was to “spend ten minutes outside”.
Which means I could spend ten minutes outside, lying in the snow and eating donuts, and that would still very much count.
And yet… reading this, you might FEEL this resisty feeling in your stomach.
Surely, it would be BETTER to spend those ten minutes walking.
Surely, it would be BETTER to spend those ten minutes, breathing deeply, or counting my blessings or something.
Maybe.
But this is exactly what happens every single time we set a goal for ourselves. And this is what I remind clients to be on the look out for:
THE GOAL CREEP…
… that insidious tendency of our brain to take a goal - any goal - and sneakily make it bigger and harder.
And so, I drill down into THE goal, and remind you and myself to KEEP THE GOAL THE GOAL.
If the goal is to spend ten minutes outside, then just do that.
Don't overthink it.
Make it as easy as possible, and give yourself a checkmark.
Do not allow your brain to quietly inflate the goal into something that is bigger.
Keep the goal the goal.
